SERVICE-BASED industries are likely to approve of higher labor cost in favor of highly skilled employees on improved earnings prospects on the back of a benign economic growth this year, industry officials said.

Employees’ annual take home pay surged by 23% to P166,618 (or P13,885 per month) in 2007 from P135,774 (or P11,315 per month) in 2002, according to the second series of the 2007 Labor Cost Survey (LCS) by the Bureau of Labor and Employment Statistics (BLES) released last month.

Call center hiring slows down, drags growth in job openings

GROWTH in online-advertised jobs eased in January from a year ago, sending the Job Availability Index to a two-month low, amid the service sector’s pale performance.

The Job Availability Index, which is a statistical measure computed by BusinessWorld using data from JobStreet.com, rose by a meager 4.7% to 281 index points last month, a stark slowdown from the 125.9% rise recorded in January last year. January also marked the first time since March 2008 that the index climbed by single digits.
