New wage levels in Eastern Visayas take effect today

TACLOBAN CITY -- The new wage order that raised Eastern Visayas’ daily basic pay by P8 and granted an additional Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) of P15 takes effect today.

Department of Labor and Employment Regional Director Forter G. Puguon said Wage Order No. 16 was published last May 17 after it was "favorably reviewed" by the National Wages and Productivity Commission.

Mr. Puguon said his office will conduct an information campaign among the region’s employers. "We do not have enough...personnel to check compliance. We will focus on educating management and help raise their [sic] capability to follow labor standards. Some employers are not aware of minimum wage rates," he noted.

The additional COLA of P15 will be implemented in two tranches. The first tranche of P10 takes effect today, while the remaining P5 will do so on Sept. 1. Including the P10 granted in 2008, this will bring workers’ total COLA to P25 by Sept. 1.

The adjustments bring the total daily minimum pay in Eastern Visayas to P231 for cottage/handicraft workers, P234 for those in the non-sugar agricultural sector, P253 for the non-agricultural workers and P213.50-P255 for those in the sugar industry. -- S. Q. Meniano
